Arabic Language Losing its Influence among Young People
Imagine that Arabic is no longer the main medium of communication in the MENA region. There is a disputable issue between people in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region about the probability of losing the impact of Arabic language because of the widespread use of the English language. In contrast, there are people who assume that the Arabic language will not lose its influence in MENA region because it is spoken by at least 274 million people. However, Arabic language will not lose its influence among young people in MENA as the universities teach in the English language and English has become a global lingua franca.
The first reason for the decreasing influence of Arabic is that many of the universities in the MENA countries teach in the English language. For example, to get a seat in Qatar University as student need to do the IELTS test. This point leads school to neglect the Arabic language. As a result, parents prefer English schools for their children to equip them with the skills they need for their future. This is because not only do most universities teach English but companies as well prefer people with an advanced level of English. All this reason make young people learn English to help them in the future.
The second reason is English language has become a lingua franca. Lingua franca means typical language between speakers who communicate in various dialects. For example, if two people from different countries and want to communicate to each other, English could be a common language between them because of its international status. There is a large number of expatriates in MENA region who do not speak Arabic. In addition, English became a lingua franca because it easy to learn it and young people prefer it more than Arabic language. Furthermore, young people find it more interesting to learn and speak English because they consider it as a trendy language and they feel modern and cool when they speak it.
On the contrary, many people think that it will not lose its effect between young people. They argue that the effect of Arabic language is continuous because it is the language of the Qur'an and part of Islam. In reality, practicing religion does not need a specific language. It needs an honest heart and strong belief. Young people can talk in any language they want and still practice and respect their religion. Actually, Qur'an can be read in any language not in Arabic only. People whose have mother language is different from Arabic can read Quran in whatever language they want because it is translated in many languages. Furthermore, not all young people in MENA are Muslims although they speak Arabic so religion does not depend on language only.
In conclusion, young people prefer English to Arabic because use it mostly in their education and English has become a lingua franca some people say that Arabic language will not lose its influence because it is an integral part of Islam, as well as being the language the of holy book. In fact, practicing religion does not need a particular language. In sum, English language is a beautiful language and should be learned by all people in world not only young people.
